Abstract
The present study examines the impact of training and development practices on employee performance among employees of selected hotels, resorts and hospitality organisations in Kodagu District, Karnataka. The study aims (i) to assess the existing training and development practices adopted by selected hospitality organisations and (ii) to examine the relationship between training and development practices and employee performance. The study adopts a descriptive and empirical research design based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from 60 employees using a structured questionnaire and a five-point Likert scale, while secondary information was obtained from government reports, tourism publications, research journals, books and institutional sources. Training and development practices were measured through training needs assessment, training content and relevance, training methods, trainer effectiveness, skill development, career development and training evaluation. Employee performance was assessed through task performance, productivity, service performance, adaptability and teamwork. The results indicate significant differences across training and development dimensions, with repeated-measures ANOVA showing F = 8.76, p < 0.001, supporting the first hypothesis concerning differences in perceived effectiveness across dimensions. Pearson’s correlation further reveals a strong positive and statistically significant relationship between training and development practices and employee performance (r = 0.746, p < 0.001), supporting the second hypothesis. The study suggests that hospitality organisations should strengthen systematic training-needs assessment, practical skill development, trainer effectiveness, career-development opportunities and regular training evaluation. The findings have policy implications for hospitality managers and tourism authorities in promoting continuous workforce development, improving service quality and strengthening the competitiveness of Kodagu’s hospitality sector.
